Hi! My name is Juan Maza. I am a Visual Storyteller with work experience across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In these locations, I have had the chance to produce a wide range of formats, from breaking news to documentaries or long-term projects for clients such as Deutsche Welle, ARTE, AFP, France 5 or El Pais, among others. One of the key projects I developed was an investigation into the paper industry in Mozambique, funded by a grant from the Journalismfund.
My work has allowed me to live in many places, such as Ukhia, a small town near the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, or in different African countries: Togo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition, for several years, I was based in Berlin, where I traveled to report on the African continent for Eco Africa, a Deutsche Welle TV show. I also covered international events such as NATO Summits, National Elections (Spain, Turkey, Denmark), terrorist attacks (Egypt, Tunisia, England, or France), the European Football Championship (2016, 2021), or the Mediterranean and Balkan migration route from the Turkish-Syrian border to Germany, among others. Currently, I am based in Seville, Spain, working as a Video Production Coordinator at Mongabay.
My willingness to learn new things and the motto that diversification is key has made me open to working outside the media industry too. I have collaborated with companies such as Microsoft, and with institutions like the European Commission. Besides, my desire to help build a better world, not only from the media, drove me to work as a Logistician for Doctors Without Borders, or to do field work, as a data collector, for the evaluation of educational projects.
On the academic side, after studying Media Studies and doing an Erasmus in The Netherlands, I was granted a Spanish State scholarship to work as a Research Assistant in the Hispanic Research Centre at the University of Roehampton, London. My passion for the investigation led me to study for a Master's in Anthropological research at UNED University. These studies have given me a good base to dig deep into topics such as communication theory, art, philosophy or the relationship between the human being and nature.
If you are interested in my work or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can talk to me in English, French or Spanish.
